Hi Ladies, I do hope you and your families are doing well!  As we all adjust to the stay at home order, the Friends of the Library Southport and; Oak Island (FOLSOI) has been working with community partners to live stream programs and provide resources for all.  The weekly programs for the month of April offered by the Southport Historical Society and FOLSOI might appeal to some of our DAR chapter members.  Please feel free to share this email with our chapter members if you think there would be any interest. All classes will be held on Thursdays in April from 1 - 2:15 pm April 2   – Southport and the War to End all Wars Southport’s population doubled overnight in 1917 when more than 1000 troops-in-training were sent to Ft. April 9   -  Southport and the 1918 Flu Pandemic The “Spanish Flu” pandemic killed more than 13,000 people in North Carolina. Find out how the citizens of Southport and the troops at Ft. Caswell fared during the crisis. April 16 -  Southport and Women’s Right to Vote Southport women were committed to improving their city even before they had the right to vote. Learn about the women who sought political change and worked to help women get out the vote. April 23 -  Brunswick County Moonshining Moonshining was a way of life and a part of North Carolina’s culture for over 300 years. Come hear the history and folklore of distilling whiskey in Brunswick County. April 30 -  Prohibition and Smuggling in Southport Prohibition began earlier and lasted longer in North Carolina than in the rest of the United States. The National Society Colonial Dames XVII North Carolina Society Century Awards Luncheon was held on March 14, 2020.

The National Society Colonial Dames XVIIC. North Carolina held its State Conference on March 12-14 in Raleigh, NC. The North Carolina CDXVIIC was honored with the presence of the National President General, Nancy "Nan" Ackerman for the weekend. Representing the Lord Craven Chapter was State Treasurer, Pat Gooding; State Scholarship Chairman, Carol Jutte and State President's Project Chairman, Linda Rivenbark

February Lord Craven Meeting February 15, 2020

Dear Dames,

Your Lord Craven Courier for February in attached.  Enjoy!! 

Our next meeting will be on Saturday, February 15th at Carolina BBQ 11:30 am.  Doors open at 11.  The program will be a presentation by our own Ruth-Anne Bolz who will bring us “Eliza Lucas Pinckney of South Carolina, and Early Colonial Woman.”

And then Carol Jutte will be holding a workshop on Heraldry and Coats of Arms after the meeting.  We will have the room until three, so there will be an hour or so in which we can ask questions and learn how to research and recognize our ancestors’ Coats of Arms.  Please try to stay for this event!

I know you weren’t thinking about Wreaths Across America, but just for the next week, perhaps you should.  WAA has promised to match the number of wreaths we sponsor just through January 15th.  This will almost ensure all the graves at Wilmington National will be covered next Christmas.  This applies to all of the fundraising organizations, but as your President, I am most hopeful you will consider purchasing through Colonial Dames 17th Century Lord Craven Chapter.  You are in the blog,  click on the Wreaths Across America tab on the right-hand side.  When the next page comes up, click in the lower middle the website address in blue.  You will go directly to the WAA page for Colonial Dames 17C with our code number NC0008p.  I just did this and we have sold 0 wreaths so far.  Not unexpected of course.  But now that we know about the matching wreaths from WAA, we might just want to buy a couple.  January 15 is the last day of the matching deal. Each wreath costs. $15.00.
