Let’s Order Some Wreaths For Wreaths Across America – Put a wreath on every Veterans Grave at Wilmington National Cemetery on December 16th, 2023.

We have one more Lord Craven Colonial Dames meeting on November 18, which would give you the opportunity to make out a check to Lord Craven Chapter CDXVII and give it to Susan DeGroote, our treasurer to order a wreath for Wreaths Across America. The price of one wreath is $17.00.  Susan will then mail a check with a total order of wreaths from the chapter. After this meeting, if you are unable to attend you can still order a wreath, but you will need a form to send the check to WAA. E-mail me at par4wilson@gmail.com and I will send you a form.  You can mail the form yourself. The cutoff date to mail a form is Nov. 15th. Be sure and put your code NC0009P and Location NCWNCE on the memo part of your check. That is why ordering by credit card gives us an immediate result of your order. If you are unsure how to order by credit card e-mail me and I will walk you through it.   Lord Craven members can also mail a check made out to Lord Craven Colonial Dames and mail it to Cindy Sellers. If you prefer to order online or by phone click on the Wreaths Across America Tab at the top of the page. Then follow the directions. If you are having technical difficulties you can e-mail Phyllis Wilson the blog manager who will be able to help you.

Lord Craven has 28 wreaths purchased for their group as of October 30. Let's be sure all of our members buy at least one wreath. Go Ladies.

2 for 1 Sale

Between December 15 until January 16th Wreaths Across America is sponsoring a 2-for-1 sale. If you order 1 wreath you will get 2, so I am suggesting that all of our Lord Craven members who would like to buy more than 1 wreath to hold off until December 15-January 16th to buy more wreaths. I am also suggesting that you should do this by ordering online. It is really very easy. You can also call up the main number and order wreaths. If you order by check you can mail in your own check, but you need an order form. You can e-mail me and I will send one to you. The check and form must be received with a check that has the dates December 15 to January 16 on it.  If you order by credit card after December 16th it will not count for the 2 for 1. We had one lady order 5 wreaths last year on January 17th and they counted as 5 wreaths. So, you need to order by the specific dates mentioned.

Thank you,

Lord Craven Chapter CDXVIIC Meeting for September 16, 2023

Jim McKee, Site Manager for Brunswick Town State Historic Site, spoke to our members at the September meeting of Lord Craven Chapter CDXVIIC at the Indian Trail Meeting Hall in Southport.  His focus was on the findings from the latest archeological excavations in the recently discovered ruins of a tavern that was not on the site map, and had been found in searching for a particular house.  Digging deep within the confines of the brick basement or first floor they found all the things one expects to find where a tavern existed, but some artifacts were tied to England and anti-King activity there, putting Brunswick Town in the midst of the earliest days of revolutionary activity in the colonies.  This tavern would have burned about 1768 before the site map was drawn in 1769.  He also told us that they now believe the British burning of the town did not take place until as late as 1781.

Vice-President Dale Spencer introduced guest speaker, Jim McKee at the Lord Craaven September 16th meeting.

The ideals in our Declaration of Independence and Constitution were formed a century before they were penned and adopted or ratified.  They began with the desire and search for religious freedom and evolved into the early Compacts and Covenants that shaped the governing bodies of the Colonies in the 1600’s.

Two early groups of immigrants, Pilgrims and Puritans, were motivated by their religious convictions. Both groups wished to purify their church by applying the principles of the Protestant Reformation which had its roots in Germany with Martin Luther. Both groups were parts of the Separatists Movement.
The search for religious freedom led more than 40,000 to leave their homeland for Massachusetts between 1620-1640, their Compacts and Covenants shaped the ideas and inspired generations of Colonists and eventually led to a Revolution and our founding documents.

We Will Never Forget - 9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

 9/11 REMEMBRANCE CEREMONY

The Richard H. Stewart, Jr. American Legion Post 543 and St. James Fire Department will host a remembrance ceremony commemorating the 22nd anniversary of 9/11. The service will be held at the St. James Community Center at 10:00 A.M. on Monday, September 11, 2023.

The remembrance service is a moving and appropriate way to memorialize the tragedy that struck our nation on September 11, 200.  FDNY Captain (Retired) Pat Cleary will share his memories of responding to the alarm and escaping the WTC North Tower collapse on that fateful day.

The SJ Fire Department will ring the ceremonial fire bell, Taps will be sounded, and Amazing Grace will be played in honor of the victims who perished. American Legion Post 543 is named after Richard H. Stewart, Jr. who was killed that day, in the WTC, and was one of the first victims of the war on terror.  His parents were residents of St. James and were responsible for getting the 9/11 national flag to Southport on the tenth anniversary of 9/11 in 2011.

The ceremony is open to the public and everyone is invited to attend.

Colonial Dames XVIIC National Conference April 4-8, 2023

The Ninety-Ninth Annual Conference was held April 4-8, 2023 at the Hilton Arlington National Landing, Washington, DC. Pat Gooding and I were off and running to start our week of attending 3 different National Lineage Societies National Conferences. The first event for the start of the NSCDXVIIC National Conference was attending the Open House and Tea at Headquarters with a meet and greet. We attended the Registrar General’s Workshop, Conference Meetings, Awards Luncheon, Achievement Luncheon, Memorial Service, and the Banquets in the evening with fiddle music and the National Choir.

There have been some updates with the Registrar General regarding the process of sending in Applications and Supplementals. Please be in touch with our Registrar before submitting any supplementals for 2023.

The election of new National Officers for 2023-2025 was held with Yvonne Hiteshue from Ohio being elected President General and the first President General from Ohio. The new National Officers can be found on the National Website at The National Society Colonial Dames XVII Century (colonialdames17c.org)

Zack Lemhouse, an accomplished musician with over 25 years of experience playing the violin was the guest speaker. Zack was inducted into the North Carolina Hall of Fame in 2020. Zack plays traditional Scottish fiddle music and teaches annually at the Jink and Dibble School of Scottish Fiddle, a Scottish Fiddle camp held in the mountains of North Carolina every summer. The music Zack played from his fiddle sounded as if he was playing the bagpipes.
